Cemetery Sunday

What is it we love so much about old cemeteries? I believe for some it is the sense of history, for others, the search for unique old epitaphs, and some of us just go to remember our loved ones. The latter has never been an option for me, as my nearest and dearest are almost all buried 3000 miles away. I hope that someday, I may be able to visit the cemetery where they are and take pictures to remember it by.

I like an old graveyard the best.

I love how this cherub's face is lit by the sun.

Where do you suppose these stairs are going to?
And what is Lattie's story?
What is it you enjoy the most about old cemeteries?

I used to walk our elderly dog through a cemetery nearby. Because she was elderly the pace was very leisurely and I used to read the headstones and wonder about the stories people could tell.

I always hope that people will record their lives in some way, for future generations. It may not seem interesting them, but to their children and grandchildren, it will be.

I find them interesting too. And how about that "mail order" bride tombstone?! That would definitely be an interesting story - maybe she never made it to the alter...

In New Orleans, We have the Cities of the Dead. Since, we cant bury people in the ground or they will float away, we have these massive concrete cities with some of the greatest tombs ever. If you ever have a chance to visit new orleans, you can take "haunted" cemetery tours and see how thousands of people are honored!

Have a great day

Yes, yes, yes, I would really like to know Lattie's story. I bet it is a good one!

We have one of the oldest cemeteries in the state a couple of miles from our house. Unfortunately it has constant trouble with vandalism. Tipping over, breaking of headstones, etc. Sad.

Hi
you left a comment on my blog so I popped by.It's funny you talking about cemetries. My grandmother used to be always visiting them with me as a small child and pointing out the people she knew.I think they're fascinating, my husband thinks I'm nuts.I always wonder how many tears have been shed there. It's strange to think people have had a life before we were even born.

I love to wander around old cemeteries. There is so much history there and each headstone tells a story. I visit them so often that when my daughter was little she was playing with her doll house. She told my mom that her dolls were going on a picnic and my mom said Oh they're going to the park? My daughter looked at her like she was crazy and said No - we're going to the cemetery LOL Poor kid thought all picnics happened in cemeteries LOL

I love to walk through cemeteries, especially old ones. I used to do headstone rubbings of the really interesting ones, but some people consider it a sort of vandalism -- for me they are memories of the past. Now I photograph them like you do -- yours are lovely, btw.
