I took two trips through the woods today, once on foot, and once on my little tractor, looking and listening for inspiration, and found none, except for being reminded once again of how much I love it here - the cold, crisp air, the scent of conifers in the air year round, the rustlings of wild things in the tangle of brush and trees. I need to get down and see my world from a different perspective if I am going to find things to share here, to inspire me to post more often.
I started last week with some mushroom photos, and got a lot questions about them that I will answer here.
This photo is how these appear when they first sprout up (overnight it seems!)
Then, after about a week, they suddenly rise up out of the ground and look like this.
And the next day, they are gone, or may as well be. Nothing has eaten these, as many people have guessed; they just sort of.....dissolve away to nothing.
I know absolutely nothing about mushrooms, I just like to take their pictures. Princess Cupcake would have loved it if these had been around when she was building fairy houses this summer! Anyone who knows a little something about these fungi, I'd love to hear your comments.

What gorgeous pictures! I never knew mushrooms could look so beautiful! I don't know any reason why they would have just melted away. Sorry!
Thank you. Your post taught me to listen. While rejoicing at your photo-story I suddenly opened my window towards the life. Thank you for the help to recover - watching the nature heals our hearts, frees from all worries with self, so I am addressing you as my healer now. Thank you
never seen pretty mushrooms like these before!
Hey, slacker blogger! Walks through the woods are good. Especially if you take cool pics like those to show us.
What gorgeous pictures! I know a little about mushrooms, because they used to sprout up everywhere and my dogs would eat them. Twice they got sick and I had expensive doggie emergency room visits... I learned that there about 40,000 kinds of mushrooms! About 10% are edible, 10% are deadly, and the rest are on a spectrum in between.
Identifying mushrooms as edible or toxic is quite an art, and even experts can get fooled. I'd be reluctant to eat any that didn't come from the grocery store, but its nice to look at how beautiful they are - in pictures!
Wow, very cool progression!
Thanks for the explanation. I was one who thought they looked eaten, but it makes more sense that they just dry up. Amazing that it happens so fast, though.
When I was in college, a plant science professor was telling us about his colleague who was one of the most knowledgeable mushroom experts in the world. After a lot of discussion about his friends expertise, someone asked what college he was at. My professor explained that he was dead, having made a fatal mistake with some tyoe of mushroom in Indonesia or some such place. You could have heard a mouse burp in that classroom. I know I have almost been afraid to even touch a wild mushroom ever since!
