Robin's Woods is located in a forested area on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. Our largest industry is logging, and at the end of the summer, we have lots of what is called "slash" piles in the logged areas, waiting to be burned during the damp and rainy winter season. Despite the fact that logging is a necessary industry, I find the presence of these slash piles sad and a little depressing to look at, but they do have their own unique beauty as well.

A wonderful shot. Enjoy your weekend.
Sad, indeed! Beautiful, evocative photo, though.
I almost didn't post to this theme, and my post is not typical "me". I hope you'll stop by, though:

Oh its cute even though that is pretty entry.
These " harvested " areas can provide areas for different species of plant or bird to move in - so long as the area is replanted then I think it's not too sad ..
Great shot..
My Photo Hunt pictures are posted here and here. Happy weekends!
Yes indeed...that is a 'sad' photo. Think of all the homes and feed for the animals that has been taken.
My photo hunt is a 'drawing of sad'...stop by, won't you?
Hope your weekend is treating you well.
It is sad to cut the life of a tree that might eventually grow into a gigantic beauty... I can see where you're coming from.
Great shot. There is a beauty about them. Happy weekend
It is a shame to desroy all those trees. Wouldn't it be great if someone could come up for some way to recycle all those tress and brush. Can you imagine the size of chipper they would have to use to make mulch? Really a depressing shot...one that make me think about what we ae doing to our world.
Excellent entry and I too know it is a necessary and a vital industry in your state yet it is sad also.
Here is my first go at photohunt.

Oh, now that is sad. I agree with your sentiment entirely. The photo is great with the gray clouds hanging over hill. Have a not *sad* weekend. :)
it is sad, poor trees! great post :-)
view mine if you wish here thanks...
oh that is the saddest shot of woods I have ever seen
Slash piles. Even the term is sad. Interesting photo-- wispy looking.
I did Photo Hunters today, too. I hope you get a chance to visit and post your link. It would make me *happy*!

Nice combo for the themes!
I hate to see the end of summer :( It's 9C right now! Brrr!
I played both!
Jennifer, I agree that pile does look sad. Autumn is a sad season. I've posted! :)
You showed it's beauty very well.
Fascinating. You showed the beauty of the scene very well. I really liked the mood you conveyed, with the clouds in the sky framing the wood. Excellent!
I'm from the NW and I had a similar thought. I am always sad when I pass the extensive clear cuts but my logical mind knows economically it is so important to the region. Great post.
what a great moody photo! Thanks for sharing.
They do have an unnatural sort of beauty. When they burn them does that impact your air quality? Or are the prevailing winds such that the smoke quickly goes east and becomes an issue for people in that direction?
What a fabulous photo! I love it.
That does look rather sad and depressing. Nice shot for combining the two challenges, though.
Mine's Here
A brooding photo captured well:)
There is beauty in the ugly in the world indeed.
Could you bring the wood home to burn as firewood? It seems such a waste.
Great perspective!
Will, it's actually not a big problem, The air quality on parts of the peninsula set the standard for pure air in the country, it is so clean. The burns are very slow, the air very moist during the burns and the weather so rainy that there is no smoke escaping into the atmosphere.
EastCoast, no we cannot. It would be trespassing and stealing to do so as the clear cut lands are either private property or owned by timber companies, but we don't need to either. We (the general population here) live in a forest and there are enough fallen trees or trees that need to be cut down (thinning to to keep the forest healthy) that we have all the firewood we can use without resorting to just chopping down trees unnecessarily.
Great picture.
Cheers,
Velu
Wow, what an amazing shot! I've never heard of slash piles before. That wonderful gray sky you've captured here really add to the overall mood.
What an evocative, moody photo. Kudos!
Your photograhy is georgous! It looks like a postcard!
A neat shot - I agree sad but I hope they are used to make something beautiful.
yes, it looks like a war zone, without bodies. Beautiful photo, nevertheless.
you are right, it does look sad even depressing. mine's up.
